Global Hit Strategy Game Forge of Empires Celebrates Tenth Anniversary

InnoGames, Germany’s leading developer and publisher of online and mobile games, celebrates the tenth anniversary of its successful strategy city-builder Forge of Empires. The global hit has experienced steady growth since its launch in 2012 and continues to gather momentum now after 10 years on the market. To celebrate the anniversary, players can look forward to a brand-new event with special prizes that runs from today through April 18th.

“Forge of Empires has come a long way. Being released on browsers only, the game still continues to improve on its original platform, to further support this audience in the years to come. Furthermore, it also made the transition to cater to mobile users on four different global platforms. It basically became a massive worldwide hit. Internally, we still have one of the largest teams working on the title, which is dedicated to improve the overall quality of the game, along with delivering fun and entertaining updates on a weekly basis. I’d like to thank all the internal teams, as well as all the players, for shaping such a great experience and entertaining game!” said Stefan Walter, Studio Director at InnoGames.

To date, players have spent more than 311,482 years’ worth of playtime in the game, during which time approximately 60 million cities have been built. When the game was first released it included a total of six eras and several months’ worth of content. There are now 20 eras with the release of Spage Age Venus and over five years’ worth of content. It takes players an average of 2,381 days, or 6.5 years, to progress through the eras, during which time players can select from over 1,000 different buildings to construct. Amongst others, features like Guild Expeditions and Cultural Settlements have been added giving players even more content.

Besides the successful transition to mobile, InnoGames ensured the longevity of the game by completing the automated conversion of Forge of Empires from Flash to HTML5, becoming the first game developer worldwide to do so using the open source compiler HAXE and without Code Freeze. This safeguarded the future of the browser version of the title when Adobe discontinued support for Flash in 2020. With the HTML5-based version in modern browsers plus the mobile apps for Android and iOS, players can continue to use the cross-platform availability requiring one account to be able to switch back and forth between platforms. Forge of Empires continues to reaffirm its position as one of the most successful strategy games worldwide on desktop and mobile alike. In 2019, the leading strategy game reached the EUR 500m lifetime revenue mark, with more than half of the lifetime revenue earned in the previous two years. Alongside ongoing content updates, mobile continues to serve as a significant driver to growth.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary milestone, there is a new board game-themed event. The objective is simple: to progress around the board. With each advancement around the board, players will take a trip through each of Forge of Empires’ unique eras. The Forge Fact-Finder is present to provide players with their next quest, while also sharing some interesting facts from the history of Forge of Empires. By completing these quests and through daily logins and incidents around one’s city, players can earn paper money that can then be used to roll the dice and progress around the board. The variety of spaces to land on results in an equally unique collection of rewards. The Grand Prize is the Golden Orrery, but one new building was not enough for this celebration. Additional prizes include the Grand King, the Grand Queen and the Stage of Ages, while new avatars are also available for players to share their progress and board game prowess with their friends.
