It is love, not just a game: InnoGames celebrates 15 years of “Tribal Wars”

Large marketing campaign accompanies the birthday of the online strategy classic

With the online strategy game "Tribal Wars", brothers Hendrik and Eike Klindworth, together with their best friend Michael Zillmer developed a modern classic of the browser game genre in 2003. Today, Tribal Wars is also playable on iOS and Android devices, with more than 300,000 active players in May 2018. With a lifetime revenue of over 110 million euros, the online strategy game has gone from being a hobby project at the time to a milestone in InnoGames' corporate history. With its large-scale “It is love, not just a game” marketing campaign and in-game events, InnoGames celebrates the 15th birthday of this unique online success story: Tribal Wars 15th Anniversary: It's love, not just a game!

“15 years is an incredibly long period of time for online and mobile games. The games industry and player preferences change rapidly. That's why I'm all the prouder that we created a strategy game with ‘Tribal Wars’ that still inspires players today with its gameplay and social interaction. It is about the fun of playing together in a tribe and not about lavish graphics,” says Hendrik Klindworth, CEO InnoGames.

Lots of stories have been written in and about strategy games. From June to September, the international marketing campaign will tell us what a lasting impact “Tribal Wars” has on the lives of many players in video and display advertising.

Their love for “Tribal Wars” was the starting point for the careers of many of InnoGames’ employees today. Dominika Borgosz, Head of Community Management at InnoGames, for example, was a very active player before she joined the Hamburg-based game developer twelve years ago. Now she coordinates more than 130 community managers worldwide.

“Tribal Wars” is now played in more than 30 languages. More than 4 percent of all active players in 2018 have been playing “Tribal Wars” for more than 10 years. The game is especially beloved in Poland, among other places. There is an online game world of “Tribal Wars” there which has been active for over 11 years and 8 months. The classic strategy game was and continues to be a launch pad for friendships and even relationships which corresponds to the InnoGames maxims. In total, more than 14 million tribes have been founded in-game. In general, the fight among tribes is about everything or nothing. Players start as the chief of a small village. The goal is to expand it bit by bit to then establish a mighty emperor together with allies in one tribe. Only players who strategize cleverly, utilize diplomacy and coordinate attacks have a chance at success.

Between June 20th - 24th, all players can look forward to being rewarded with special gifts as part of an event. As part of the anniversary campaign, a new feature will also be released in autumn for “Tribal Wars”.
